Money Mondays: What Actually Is... The Stock Market
This is for the woman who has money sitting in a 401k she's never looked at, who nods along when the stock market comes up in conversation, and who has quietly wondered for years: okay but what actually is it. No judgment. Nobody told us. Today we fix that.
Not just what it is. But why it matters. And what to do about it.
Do You Feel Like..
The stock market is something that happens to other people? Like it's this mysterious thing men like to bring up to bat signal to women to leave the conversation? I used to scroll past market headlines like they were written in another language. Numbers going up. Numbers going down. Someone on CNBC looking very serious about it. And me thinking okay cool, not my problem. Except it was always my problem. It just took me a while to realize it.
The Stock Market: What It Actually Is
The stock market is a marketplace. That's it. Just like Etsy is a marketplace where people buy and sell handmade goods, or how a farmers market is a place where people buy and sell produce. The stock market is just like that but now instead of ownership of a t shirt or handbag, now you get to own the company that makes those goods and services. Talk about taking an upgrade.
When a company wants to raise money to grow so they can hire more people, build new products, expand, etc. instead of just going to a bank for a loan, they can sell small pieces of ownership to the public. Those pieces are called shares. And the place where those shares get bought and sold every single day is the stock market.
When you own a share of a company you own a tiny piece of that business. When the business does well and grows, your piece becomes worth more. When it struggles, your piece is worth less. The stock market is just millions of people every day deciding what they think companies are worth and buying or selling accordingly.
The two main ones you hear about are the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ. Think of them like two different malls. Different stores, same concept. You're shopping for ownership in businesses.
More than likely, you're already an investor in the stock market, via your 401k. If you don't have your 401k set up via work, girlfriend stop reading this letter and go do that right the fuck now. This is the easiest way to build wealth especially if you're employer matches your contributions. You are a stock market participant right now whether you know it or not. The question is just whether you're paying attention to it.
The Part Nobody Talks About
The market moves on emotion as much as logic. Because people are emotional and they just like in the everyday life use those emotions can get you ahead or leave you behind. When people are confident, they buy, market calls this greed. When people get scared, they sell, market term is fear. The Fear Greed Index is a great way to understand the vibe of the market. Right now markets are swinging based on tariff announcements, AI headlines, Fed decisions. One tweet from the wrong person can move a stock. These are chaotic times we're living in. But chaos creates opportunity..
But zoom out and the picture changes completely. The market has survived every war, every recession, every crisis, every panic in modern history, and it has always, eventually, gone higher. If someone in 1929 after Black Thursday that the S&P 500 would go from $32 to today's value of more than $7k a unit.. They would have been admitted to an insane asylum. But that's exactly what happened. And again in the 70s, after the dot com boom and then again in 2020..
The people who lost money in the stock market are mostly the ones who panic sold when things got ugly. The people who built wealth are the ones who stayed in and let time do the work.
The stock market is not a casino. It's a ownership machine. And right now you might already own a seat at the table without even knowing it. So your goal this week is to look into what those accounts are holding.
You're an absolute queen. Time to know what you own.
